Mining Development

AKT conducted its initial feasibility study in April 2005, but no significant targeted exploration ensued until BORN started major development and construction at the coalmining project in early 2008.

After only ten months of mine and infrastructure development, in October 2008, AKT obtained a bulk pilot mining license from the Ministry of Mines and Energy to produce 100,000 tons of coal. It was granted permission for commercial production in September 2009. In 2009, AKT mined had 0.9 million tons of premium quality hardcoking coal, 2010 saw production of 1,9 mtons of hard coking coal and in 2011 3,3 mtons was produced.

AKT has consistently achieved ramp-ups to its production capacity, which by 31 December 2009 had reached 2.4 million tons per annum (mtpa) by end of 2010 capacity had been grown to 3.6 mtons and by end of 2011 5 mtons. The company is currently sourcing equipment and improving infrastructure in order to achieve a production capacity to 10 mtpa by end of 2013.

AKT plans to further increase production capacity to 10 mtpa by 2016.
